Joshua “Double J” Pagan

WELTERWEIGHT | 5’ 11” | 11-0-4 KO’s

Joshua “JJ” Pagan was born in Sebring, FL and moved with his family to Michigan at age 5. JJ’s grandparents are natives of Puerto Rico who moved to the U.S. in the early ’60s. Joshua’s grandfather, Gonzalo Pagan, Sr., was a major support for JJ until his death on April 10, 2020.  His grandfather was a huge fan of Wilfredo Benitez, Felix “Tito” Trinidad and Miguel Cotto. (The latter is Joshua’s favorite Puerto Rican fighter).

JJ says his Dad, trainer Tone Pagan, never forced him to take up boxing, but rather, let him find a love for the game on his own. And he certainly did. He says boxing is the only sport he showed interest in growing up. He recalls watching De La Hoya vs. Mayweather and he knew then that he wanted to be like his Dad.

JJ studies video of all the boxing greats and credits his eclectic style to this practice. As a result, he can box or brawl, adjusting to any situation as necessary. In a fight at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, JJ recalls meeting an extremely aggressive opponent who wanted only to brawl. However, JJ stayed calm and composed and then rocked the brawler with an uppercut knockout punch.

The 5’11” Pagan fights at 135 lbs., which he says is his best weight. He won the 2021 USA Boxing National Championship at 147 lbs. On May 23, 2024, Joshua beat 13-0 Roger Hilley to claim the NABF Jr. Super Lightweight title in a unanimous decision. It was a brusing 8-round co-main event bout at Wayne State Fieldhouse in Detroit.

JJ has family in Aguas Buenas, Puerto Rico who follow their great-nephew and cousin’s career closely.  When JJ defeated veteran Haskell Rhodes in a 10-round unanimous decision on 10/18/24 at Cocal Cola Music Hall in San Juan, he showed respect to his grandfather by kissing his arm as a tribute. It was an honor for Joshua to take his talents back to his origins.
